Oktoberfest, the annual beer-and-bratwurst bacchanal, originated in Munich, Germany, in 1810. The revelry—which actually begins in September—has inspired lively celebrations across America, where polka bands play, the dress code demands lederhosen and steins brim with lager. But if you think Oktoberfest is just a costumed keg party, it’s time to adjust your outlook.

Breweries and festival organizers are broadening the focus beyond beer consumption, programming dachshund races, heavy-metal polka bands and restaurant-quality schnitzel, and guests of all ages are now invited to the Oktoberfest party.
