In the spring of 2020, the global pandemic lobbed a viral wrench into everyday life, closing schools and offices, restaurants, bars, and brewery taprooms. The market for draft beer dried up, leaving breweries scrambling. Canned four-packs of craft beer—with label artwork as edgy and elegant as the hazy IPAs inside—became the brewers’ economic life preserver. America’s more than 8,000 craft breweries scrambled to package every pint inside cans, churning out more labels than ever, including a few that spoke to our unprecedented historical moment.
